DISCONTINUATION OF I-MO (INSTANT MONEY ORDER) SERVICE

DISCONTINUATION OF I-MO (INSTANT MONEY ORDER) SERVICE

This is regarding discontinuation of Instant Money Order (IMO) Service of Department of Posts, which was introduced vide GSR No. 30 (E) dated 20 January, 2006.

2. All the Circles were intimated in this regard vide this Division's letter of even no. dated 17.1.2020 (copy enclosed). Certain instructions were also issued on the subject for strict adherence by the Circle and field units so as to ensure smooth closure of the service.

3. It is reiterated that the IMO service will be discontinued shortly through the issuance of Gazette Notification and no iMO will be booked and paid thereafter. Hence, Circles should ensure that in the interim period i.e. from now till issuance of Gazette Notification of discontinuation of the service) if any IMO is booked, the remitter of iMO should be categorically told that the amount of iMO should be received on the same day by the Payee.

The nearby iMO Center/ Post Office of the payee's address should also ensure that the iMO is paid immediately on the day it is received.

4. For this purpose, it is required that the suitable instructions are communicated to all Regions/ Divisions/ IMO Centres (Post Offices). Wide publicity may be given to the public members and customers of iMO should be appraised of forthcoming discontinuation of iMO service.

Suitable instructions in regional language should also be put up in the Post Office notice board.

5. Further, in few Circles like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala etc where iMOs are being
booked, it is suggested that the customers of IMO may be contacted and informed about the ensuing discontinuation of the Services. They should also be educated about the following
alternative means of money remittance available in Department of Posts:

(1) Customers can use eMO service, which also provides prompt and electronic transmission of money order with add on feature of doorstep delivery,

(i) Customers can use POSB account with ATM and money can be transferred through POSB Account of remitter to POSB account of the payee.

(ii) Customers can use the services of India Post Payment Bank for money remittance.

6.This issues with the approval of the competent authority.
