Rahul Questions Modi Govt Over 7th Pay Commission, Growing Unemployment

New Delhi, December 4: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over unemployment, and fixed and contract workers not getting their due even after the implementation of 7th Pay Commission. Raising the sixth question ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections, Rahul asked why fixed contractual workers being paid Rs 5,500 and Rs 10,000 per month when their monthly pay is Rs 18,000.
In his “a question a day” series, Rahul tweeted, “This is the double whammy of the BJP — on the one hand, youth is unemployed and on the other fixed and contractual workers are not getting their due. Despite 7th pay commission recommendations suggesting Rs 18,000 per month as minimum pay, why is the pay for fixed and contract workers at Rs 5,500 and Rs 10,000?”
Supporting his claim with a video in which a part-time teacher said, “Even after working for 22 years, my salary is Rs 12,000…only 12,000. They have kept us in the salary slab of Rs 40,000 even after working for 22 years. I request you that when we retire, we should get our pension so that we can lead our life respectfuly.”
On Sunday, Rahul questioned Modi on the issue of crime against women in Gujarat and raised concerns over their safety, even as he accused him of merely making promises. “The women got neither safety, nor education or nutrition, but only exploitation. From Anganwadi to ASHA workers, everyone was disappointed. Only promises were made to the women of Gujarat and it was never their intention to fulfil them,” Gandhi tweeted.
The Gandhi scion, who is leading his party’s poll campaign in the western state, had earlier accused the prime minister of “commercialising education at the cost of government schools and institutions, and hitting students hard with fee hikes”.
The tagline of his posers to the prime minister is “22 salon ka hisaab, Gujarat mange jawaab (Gujarat demands answers for 22 years of BJP rule)”. The Amethi MP had earlier asked Modi why public money was “squandered” in purchasing power at higher rates from private companies in Gujarat.
The two-phased Gujarat elections will take place on December 9 and 15. The counting of votes and result will be declared on December 18.
